Pinnacles strop rescue

On the 28th of July a 62 year old climber from Auckland took a fall from above the “door” in the pinnacles and was injured severely. Whakapapa ski patrol members were alerted to the situation via St. John and responded. RARO was initiated and a helicopter called out. Staging from top of the knoll we stropped Ryan Leong into the site with a rescue nappy. Nat did a great job of keeping things steady and the patient was flown to Waikato for further treatment. All in all, a reasonably technical wee number but great to be working with such a good crew. RARO forever!..

Waterfall Hole Training – October

We had a great day at Whakapapa Ski Area facilitated by Trav and Nick training on Waterfall Hole extractions and cliff raise and lowers. The new training facility provided by RAL aka the ‘Cave’ is perfect for all weather exercises and provides easy access anchors as well as snow and rock for realistic options. A film crew from NHNZ was also capturing the operation for a documentary coming up in the new year. Thanks to all those who made the effort to come on up.

Rescue from Turoa – June 2 2012

There was a rescue today for two climbers who slipped on ice and went a fair distance over some rough ground. They were just above the Jumbo T at around 2400m. The call came in at around 1120hrs through the National Park Police. Conrad made a couple of quick calls as the Youthtown Trust Rescue Helicopter from Taupo was on route and 2 RARO team members were up lifted from National Park school. Tony, our friendly alpine paramedic, was on board. They team located the injured party drop a heap of gear off at the car park then flew the team up and hover unloaded near the patients. There were 3 others in the group and 2 other climbers who assisted. The patients were assessed and 1 had some bruising to her hip and leg the other had some facial trauma, some abdominal bruising and was in an advanced state of shock. Both patients were assisted to the hover load site and brought down to the car park were the male patient was given IV fluids. He was then transferred to Rotorua hospital for further examination. The rest of the group was air lifted to the car park where they had their vehicles.

They were all fairly well equipped, crampons, ice axe, helmet, etc (staying at the tramping club hut) . I believe the female just lost her footing where as the male lost his foot wear. His foot wear was the only real concern as they were Cat work boot type shoes.

A good job by all involved and very lucky with the weather.

Helicopter Training Update

About 18 members of RARO met with the Youthtown Rescue Helicopter team at Whakapapa on the 5th May 2012 for training with the new Human Sling load system. This strop consists of a two point attachment at the helicopter and allows for emergency release of a belly band by the crew person in the machine. The strop itself is a single low stretch rope which is bright orange and very easy to see and use. All in all, we are very pleased to have access to this great resource again! Thanks to the Youthtown Rescue Helicopter crew for making the day run smoothly.

Longline Rescue from Ngauruhoe

At about 2pm on the 2/4/12 a 15 year old male fell when descending the North Ridge of Ngauruhoe with a school group. During the fall he sustained a moderate puncture wound and couldn’t move from his location. The Youthtown Rescue Helicopter flew an initial team of two to the accident site and then another team of two after that to assist. The cloud layers remained just above the accident site and once the patient was packaged he was flown on the longline from site to a staging area near Soda Springs. The patient was handed over to St Johns paramedics and taken to Taupo hospital at about 4pm.

Ngauruhoe Rescue 16 March

A 19 year old American woman has been rescued off Mt Ngauruhoe today after becoming trapped by steep terrain off trail on her descent from the summit.

She reached the top of the mountain around 9am today having found her way there by an unorthodox route from the Mangatepopo Valley. Her descent took her down a similar route but she lost her nerve a third of the way down and called Police for help. Some of her gear tumbled down the mountain ahead of her and she ripped the seat out of her pants while sliding down the scree slope.

Taupo Police dispatched the Youthtown Rescue Helicopter to Ngauruhoe and she was found after a short search. A LandSAR RARO rescuer was put out on rocks adjacent to her and he managed to coax her to a suitable spot where they were hover loaded for the flight to lower ground.

RARO Team Involved in Multiple Rescue from TNP

On Saturday 18th February, RARO team members were involved in three rescues from the Tongariro National Park including one life threatening cardiac patient. All three patients have made good recoveries and they are great examples of the good work we do in conjunction with the Youthtown Rescue Helicopter and St Johns Taupo paramedics. Below are some details from the guys involved:

Blake McDavitt – DOC wrote:
The initial call was for a patient on Nguaruhoe with a dislocated shoulder and broken collarbone, as we were getting set up a call came through for the 69 year old man in South Crater with chest pain.
The last call to come through was for a woman on the top of Nguaruhoe with an injured knee.

Tony More – St Johns Paramedic wrote:

Quick summary, First we were responding to shoulder injury on Ngauruhoe in the cloud, then told about a chest pain at red crater, landed near pt, GCS 15, 10/10 heavy central chest pain. no history, did vitals and given aspirin, then arrested. CPR and shocked x 3 in total, adrenaline x 2 and amiodarone, got pulse back, GCS 14 and talking to Darryl, put on stretcher and loaded into chopper, re-arrested, CPR down to Mangatopopo carpark, shocked x 3 and adrenaline x 3, got pulses back but very combative, given midazalam so he was calm to fly, pt breathing on his own all the way to ED, ED confirmed pt had had a big MI, within 30 mins he was sitting up with a GCS of 15 and remembered me talking to him on the mtn before he arrested. AMAZING…Transferred to Waikato.

Brilliant job, thanks guys, see you at the next one

Rescue Report – 30th November 2011 – Ngauruhoe

On the morning of Wednesday 30th November the Youth Town Rescue Helicopter was alerted to an incident where a young gentleman had fallen while descending the northern slopes of Mt Ngauruhoe.
Two RARO team members were required to assist the helicopter crew with the locating and the packaging of the patient. While en route from Whakapapa Village to Mt Ngauruhoe another call was received relating to a subsequent second gentleman who had sustained a head injury from a fall in a location about two thirds of the way up Mt Ngauruhoe.

Five RARO team members were put on standby to add support in event of changes in conditions and weather.
The crew of the Youth Town Rescue Helicopter located a gentleman with head lacerations and in a conscious but confused state. The two RARO members were dropped off by the helicopter and left with the task of packaging the first of the two injured men. The first of the two men were air lifted out while the RARO team walked down the mountain to locate the second person with the suspected leg injury.

The operation was completed by mid afternoon with the result of two men being flown to Rotorua hospital, one with head injuries and the other with a suspected broken fibula.

Waterfall Hole Training at Whakapapa

We had a great day out on the cliffs in Happy Valley this weekend training in vertical cliff raise and lowers. The original plan had been to do waterfall hole training but the weather conspired against our plan and we opted for a lower altitude option. There were two members of the Rotorua USAR team that joined us for the day which was good. I think the whole crew learned a lot from the day including reinforcing how important edge protection really is!……
