Helicopter Training at Taupo

We had a great day out at the Taupo hanger with the crew from the Youthtown Rescue Helicopter on Saturday. The focus was on winch use in and out of the machine since we are temporarily out of action with regards the use of the traditional Strop (longline) until things get sorted out by the CAA.

Overall, it was a great morning and a good chance to work with Nat Every the new pilot at Taupo. Mountain rescue with helicopters is all about building relationships with the team you work with and the more we can do the better the system works.

Thanks to the crew that turned out and to the Youthtown Trust for donating the time to this training.

Waterfall Hole Training

The RARO crew managed to get together for a good training session at Whakapapa with a focus on waterfall hole rescue.

We found a good hole to use for training in the Valley Waterfall area. Although the weather was a bit grim we all managed to blow the cobwebs out and get through a couple evolutions.

A draft pre-plan for waterfall hole rescue has been tabled for review by the crew in the next few weeks that can keep the IMT on the right track when managing these situations in the future.

The crew relaxing with a beer and bbq thanks to Spud and Conrad – thanks guys.

RARO History

RARO was set up in 1990 in a response to issues and concerns coming out of the Army Tragedy which occurred on Ruapehu that year. It is a collaborative effort by 4 main organisations in the Tongariro National Park to provide alpine search and rescue services in that area. Those organisations are the Police, Department of Conservation, Sir Edmund Hillary Outdoor Pursuits Centre and Ruapehu Alpine Lifts Ltd. They are bound by a Memorandum of Agreement which lays down details on how RARO is managed and operates. It can be viewed here.

Team Member Gear List

This is always an interesting topic of discussion and we often reflect on it prior/during and after operations and in our everyday work in the mountains. Check this proposed list out and see how it fits with your thoughts. It would be great to get a confirmed list in place for the summer months and see how that goes. The proposed list is RARO Team Member Equipment List.
